Liberty Mutual home insurance coverages
When you take out a Liberty Mutual home insurance policy, expect coverage in six key areas. These include:
- Dwelling coverage: Pays for repairing or rebuilding your house if it’s damaged or destroyed by a problem covered in your policy, such as a house fire. You should carry enough dwelling insurance to fully rebuild your house, from the ground up, based on current costs for structures of similar size and quality.
- Other structures coverage: If your property has additional structures unattached to your house, such as a gazebo or shed, this pays to rebuild or repair those if they are affected by a covered issue.
- Personal property coverage: Reimburses you for stolen or damaged personal belongings, including furniture, clothing and electronics, if they are affected by a covered problem, like a home break-in or windstorm. Personal property provides actual cash value coverage, meaning it factors depreciation into claim payouts. If you want replacement coverage that provides reimbursements based on current costs, you can ask about upgrading your policy.
- Loss of use coverage: This reimburses costs related to housing, food and other approved expenses if your house becomes uninhabitable due to a covered problem.
- Personal liability coverage: If you cause damage to someone else or their property, personal liability pays for their medical or repair costs as well as your legal fees, if it goes to court. For example, liability insurance can cover medical fees if your dog attacks someone at the park and that person needs surgery. It can also pay for your legal and settlement fees if they sue you over lost wages from their injury. Liability coverage typically ranges from $100,000 to $300,000.
- Medical payments to others coverage: Pays for medical expenses of anyone minorly injured on your property, regardless of who is at fault. It typically goes up to $5,000 in coverage and is used when injuries aren’t significant enough to file a liability claim.
Additional coverages offered by Liberty Mutual
Liberty Mutual offers many optional insurance coverages to ensure you, your house and your belongings receive adequate financial protection. These include:
- Personal property replacement cost coverage: Pays the current replacement cost for your personal property rather than using depreciated actual cost value.
- Scheduled items coverage: Allows you to “schedule” specific high-cost items on a per-item basis, including jewelry, art and firearms, since standard home insurance has limits on how much it’ll pay out for theft of expensive belongings. For example, high-value items like firearms are typically only covered up to $2,500 in the event of a theft claim.
- Blanket jewelry coverage: Pays to replace your jewelry collection if it’s lost or stolen, with no deductible. This is on a collection basis, not an itemized basis like scheduled items coverage.
- Umbrella coverage: Provides a higher level of personal liability coverage — on top of what your home and auto insurance policies offer. Liberty Mutual’s umbrella insurance is sold in $1 million increments.
- Water backup coverage: Pays for repair costs if your house or belongings are damaged by water due to sump pump failures, sewer and drain backups or water damages from plumbed appliances such as dishwashers or washing machines.
- Inflation protection coverage: Automatically increases home insurance coverage limits annually to align with inflation. You also get a discount for carrying this optional coverage.
What does Liberty Mutual home insurance cover?
Dwelling coverage in a standard home insurance policy pays to repair your house if it’s damaged by any problems unless it’s specifically listed as an exclusion in your homeowners policy. Many home insurance companies exclude problems like flooding or earthquakes and offer standalone insurance policies to protect against these issues.
Personal property coverage uses a “named peril” model, meaning the insurance policy lists the types of problems it will cover if your belongings are damaged or destroyed. These include:
- Fire and lightning.
- Windstorm and hail.
- Explosions.
- Riot or civil commotion.
- Damage caused by aircraft (not your own).
- Damage caused by vehicles (not your own).
- Smoke.
- Vandalism or malicious mischief.
- Theft and home break-in.
- Volcanic eruption.
- Falling objects.
- Weight of snow, sleet or ice.
- Accidental discharge or overflow of water or steam.
- Sudden and accidental tearing apart, cracking or burning.
- Freezing.
- Sudden and accidental damage from electrical current.
What doesn’t Liberty Mutual home insurance cover?
No home insurance policy provides full coverage against all problems, making it important to carefully review your policy to understand what type of coverage you’re buying. Homeowners insurance typically does not cover the following problems.
- Flooding: You’ll need to buy flood insurance to protect your home and belongings against flooding loss and damage.
- Earthquake damage: Damage sustained by earthquakes, mudslides or other types of earth movement requires an earthquake insurance policy for coverage. The exception to this rule is if a fire breaks out due to the earthquake, causing loss. If this happens, your standard policy should cover rebuilding costs.
- Water and sewer backup: Standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover water and sewer backups, but Liberty Mutual offers optional water backup coverage that you can add to your policy.
- Wear and tear: Gutters rust, shingles break and pipes corrode as part of a house aging. Homeowners are encouraged to do regular maintenance on their homes, but they won’t be able to file a claim for issues caused by wear and tear.
